Social Workers recognise the importance of social factors for people’s wellbeing. They understand that things like housing, money, relationships and the impact of oppression and discrimination can significantly affect a person’s ability to lead a satisfying and safe life.
Mental health social workers may provide a range of interventions such as therapy, advocacy, building community connections, safeguarding and co-ordinating aspects of support and care. They may also have particular roles and duties under the Mental Health Act (see ‘Approved Mental Health Professionals’).
They will usually be part of multi-disciplinary teams, working alongside nurses, support workers, psychiatrists, psychologists and occupational therapists, in a range of settings.
