Finish the ‘Delirium Awareness’ course

Course Summary

The main aim of this course has been to raise awareness of what delirium is and to help people to deal with it. We hope that you now have:

  • An awareness of what delirium is. We defined delirium as a neuropsychiatric condition resulting in acute problems with attention, arousal and cognition for which there is normally an underlying cause.
  • Looked at why we need to know about delirium. Delirium is common, it often goes unrecognised and can lead to serious complications. However, it can also be prevented.
  • Thought about the causes and signs of delirium. We looked at the different reasons for delirium, identified groups more at risk of developing it, gave real-life clinical examples and suggested signs to look for. In addition, we explained how to use the single question in delirium. This is ‘Have they been more confused lately?’
  • Know how to help someone to deal with delirium. If you think someone may have delirium you should let a healthcare professional know. This could be their GP or healthcare team if they are in hospital. We also considered the different ways you can make the situation more comfortable for someone while they wait for treatment.
  • Know where to find out more about delirium. On the homepage for this course, you can find free resources about delirium as well links to other websites to visit. Look for the ‘Materials’ tab.
